Young Southwest: Growing up in Las Cruces, New Mexico

Since 1992 I have been working on a project about families and children where I live in Las Cruces,  New Mexico, 40 miles north of the U.S./Mexico border.  I photograph friends, acquaintances, and people I meet at events and places like fairs, parades, dance classes, and shopping malls.  Some are families that have lived in New Mexico for generations and others have moved here in recent years from other states, from Mexico or other countries.   There are the usual influences of television, mall stores, advertising, movies, and video games here, but there also are strong community and religious traditions of this region.  I am fascinated by how children grow up in this multi-ethnic environment, how the new and the traditional blend and clash in unexpected ways.
